Key Steps to Understanding Magnesium Deficiency and Dehydration

Do you ever find you aren't able to recall names or facts as well or that you seem to be moody or out of sorts? Maybe you aren't sleeping as well or when you are, you get awaken with one of those darn leg cramps!

As we age, maintaining optimal health becomes increasingly important. For mid-life and older women, reducing toxic load and staying hydrated are crucial steps to living healthier, happier, and younger longer. In this post, I’ll delve into the interrelated issues of magnesium deficiency and dehydration, and provide some practical advice to help you thrive.

So what is Magnesium Deficiency?
Magnesium deficiency occurs when the body doesn't get enough of this essential mineral, which is crucial for many bodily functions, including muscle and nerve function, blood glucose control, bone health and more.

And what is Dehydration?
Dehydration happens when you lose more fluids than you take in, leading to an imbalance in electrolytes and other essential nutrients. This condition can severely affect your health and wellbeing, particularly as you age.

Magnesium plays a critical role in maintaining electrolyte balance, and dehydration can further deplete magnesium levels.
This interrelationship means that managing one often helps manage the other, enhancing overall health.

Some Health Implications of Magnesium Deficiency and Dehydration
  • Cardiovascular Health: Magnesium supports heart health, while dehydration can strain the cardiovascular system.
  • Muscular Function: Both conditions can lead to muscle cramps and weakness.
  • Cognitive Function: Proper hydration and magnesium levels are essential for cognitive clarity.
  • Long-term Chronic Conditions: Addressing these issues can help prevent chronic diseases such as osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease.
Some Symptoms of Magnesium Deficiency
  • Muscle Cramps and Spasms
  • Fatigue and Weakness
  • Numbness and Tingling
  • Mental Health Issues: Anxiety and depression
  • Irregular Heartbeat
Some Symptoms of Dehydration
  • Thirst and Dry Mouth
  • Dark-Colored Urine
  • Fatigue and Dizziness
  • Decreased Urine Output
  • Dry Skin

Some of the Causes of Magnesium Deficiency Are:
  1. Inadequate Diet
    • Poor Nutrition: Diets low in vegetables, nuts, and seeds can lead to magnesium deficiency.
    • Processed Foods: These often lack essential nutrients, including magnesium.
  2. Increased Magnesium Loss
    • Gastrointestinal Disorders: Conditions like Crohn's disease and celiac disease can hinder magnesium absorption.
    • Kidney Issues: Poor kidney function can lead to excessive magnesium loss.
  3. Certain Medications
    • Diuretics: Increase urine output, leading to magnesium loss.
    • Antibiotics: Some can interfere with magnesium absorption.
  4. Chronic Health Conditions
    • Diabetes: High blood sugar levels can cause magnesium to be lost in urine.
    • Alcoholism: Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to poor nutrient absorption and increased loss.
  5. Age-Related Factors: As we age, our bodies may become less efficient at absorbing magnesium.

Causes of Dehydration Are:
  1. Inadequate Fluid Intake
    • Lack of Water Consumption: Many people simply don’t drink enough water daily. And I am talking water, not fluids. If you don't particularly care for plain water Check Out this POST for ways to naturally flavor it.
    • Poor Diet Choices: Diets low in fruits and vegetables can contribute to dehydration.
  2. Excessive Fluid Loss
    • Sweating: Increased fluid loss through sweating, particularly in hot weather or during exercise.
    • Illnesses: Fever, vomiting, and diarrhea can lead to significant fluid loss.
  3. Medical Conditions
    • Diabetes: High blood sugar levels can lead to increased urination and fluid loss.
    • Kidney Diseases: Can affect the body's ability to balance fluids and electrolytes.
  4. Medications
    • Diuretics: Cause increased urine output.
    • Laxatives: Can lead to fluid loss through bowel movements.

What Can You Do? Here are some Prevention and Management Reccommondations:
  1. Dietary Recommendations
Magnesium-Rich Foods: Incorporate leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and whole grains into your diet.
  • Hydration Strategies: Aim to drink plenty of water and consider including electrolyte-rich drinks. My favorite comes in convinient single serving packet so I can always have it with me, just in case I need more than just water. I love that it has 4 different types of Magnesium in it along with other elctrolytes. Since regularly using it, I find that I don't have the joint stiffness like before. I'm not much of a fan of the Lemon-Lime but really like the Wild Strawberry! Learn more about it HERE.

  1. Lifestyle Modifications
    • Regular Physical Activity: Exercise helps maintain muscle function and overall health.
    • Stress Management Techniques: Practices like yoga, meditation, and mindfulness can reduce stress, which in turn supports better nutrient absorption and hydration.  Need a little help? Check out this post to help you - Reduce Anxiety with the Combo of Mindful Meditation and Essential Oils
