Does you laundry detergent need a cleaning?

Does you laundry detergent need a cleaning? After reading the ingredients, I found mine sure did!

Two common ingredients in most detergents are Sodium Lauryl Sulfate & Sodium Laureth Sulfate/ Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate (SLS/ SLES).
They are the main ingredients in detergents and you can also find it in dish liquid, hand wash, and shampoo.
Why are they used? Well, SLS and SLES are surfactants which are used  to remove soil and as a foaming agent.  Did you know that they were originally developed as garage floor degreaser? So they are pretty powerful.

Unfortunately, they are toxic and can inflame skin, eyes, and lungs (1), and damage internal organs (2). SLS/ SLES is toxic in the environment as well. They are so irritating that when researchers are testing healing agents, they will use them to induce acute skin and eye irritation (3),

Maybe you haven't really noticed any irritations. However, as these chemicals build up in your body, they create health issues that you may not even be aware of the relationship to this root cause. It can be slow and a very sneaky process that you didn't know was even happening.

If you are wanting to reduce your toxic load and that of your family's, you might be wondering if there is a better way to clean ones clothes. And, yes, there is with out these and the other chemicals. And, I have found that the following ways actually get everything even cleaner, too!
